Content Standards

All pages must be in compliance with the appropriate VCUHS policies and applicable local, state, and federal laws, including copyright.

Links to educational material in support of the VCUHS mission is allowed. However, if the educational material contains sensitive information, written approval from the appropriate department manger and the Intranet Advisory Committee is required.

Pages must be in support of the VCUHS mission and in conformance with VCUHS policies. Pages may not be used to promote commercial activity, personal business, non-profit organizations and/or religious groups or to promote personal financial gain.

Pages must not contain confidential information about employees, patients or their families without written consent and approval of the Intranet Advisory Committee.

Links to commercial sites are strongly discouraged. If such links are necessary, the following disclaimer must be used on the primary VCUHS home page from which the links are made:

"Virginia Commonwealth University Health System does not endorse the following commercial provider or its products."

Anyone wishing to build or maintain a web page on the VCUHS intranet is required to attend classes offered by Information Systems.

Page Design Guidelines

No Shared Borders (i.e. horizontal and vertical bars/menus cannot intercept established template)

Must maintain navigation as defined (i.e., via global and local menus)

When linking to a site outside of the VCUHSWEB or a newsletter, which does not allow for our navigation, the content must be opened in a "new" window.

Maintain 15 sec load time whenever possible. Your users will become frustrated if it takes longer for the image to appear.

No download plug and plays. Many computers at VCUHS do not have this capability and it will prevent your site from being as usable.

Build to 600x800 resolution. Meaning, any page should be able to be view with a screen resolution of 600x800 and not require left to right scrolling.

When building tables, use percentage rather than actual pix size.

Utilize three click rule whenever possible. Meaning, the user should not have to click more than three times to get to where they want to be.

Each department must create and maintain a site map using the provided template.

Once completed, a Go Live Notice is sent to the Webmaster for review and incorporating into the VCUHSWEB site.

Each department is responsible for creating and maintaining their pages. Pages must be updated in a timely manner to ensure system integrity.

All pages must contain:

  • Date of last revision
  • Name of the unit responsible for the page
  • An email link to the person responsible for the page.

All "local menus" must contain a GO TO option, which includes links to department's home page and to their site map.

Links should be used whenever possible to avoid recreating content.

All Drop Down options should be housed in separate folders with subfolders for images.

Pages may not contain script files, ASP, Flash, etc. Basically, include only htm and image files.

Web sites will be identified in the following manner:

  • departmentname.mcvh-vcu.edu
  • The first page of each folder being default.htm
  • All forms being sent should show a sent message.
